Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry
 

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry was conferred on her in the year 1950 by the Autonomous University of Mexico, and she was awarded the faculty prize in her class in recognition of her having completed her studies with honours. She pursued graduate studies in Switzerland, England and the United States of America. She obtained a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in the year 1962. She has always worked at the Pathology Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, first under the leadership of Professor Manuel H. Sarvide. In the year 1971, she was appointed as head of this Department. She has collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization as an expert working in various countries of Asia, Africa and South America. She has travelled to Italy, Switzerland, England, the United States of America, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden for study-related stays.

She has been a member of the following: Regulatory Commission of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in the years 1971, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980; the Higher Studies Commission of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry in 1971 and from 1976 to this day, and the Restructuring Commission for the Curriculum of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry in 1974 and 1991.

She is also a member of the following associations: the Committee for Optimal Use of Animals in the Laboratory of the National Academy of Medicine, the Mexican Academy of Veterinary Medicine, the World Association of Veterinary Educators, the Animal Welfare Institute, the Women’s World Veterinary Association, the Academy of Bioethics, the Committee for Humanitarian Veterinary Treatment of the National Board of Veterinary Sanitation, the Policy Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development (SAGAR, regulating transportation, animal sacrifice and experimentation), the Committee for Ethology and Animal Welfare of the World Veterinary Association, among others. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of National and International Scientific Veterinary Journals. Since 1997, she has been the director of the research projects that have received the funding provided by the Geraldine Foundation of the United States of America, and in 1999, she was invited to become a member of the reviewing committee.

In the year 1985, she was given the title of Emeritus Professor by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 1985, she was declared a Level I National Researcher with Mexico’s National System of Researchers, achieving the Level II status in 1994, and the Level III status in 1997.

In 1989 and 1993, she was awarded the Level D Prize in Teaching by the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

She has directed over 85 bachelor’s theses and 15 graduate theses.

In the past few years, her research has focused on taeniasis-cysticercosis (taenia sodium), and she is the coordinator of the programme aimed at the equidae of marginalised farmers, IDPT-ILPH-UNAM.

She has published around 123 scientific papers, translated books, written chapters in several books, and has given more than 300 presentations in Mexico and abroad, at universities, conferences and expert associations.
