AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF COAHUILA

The Autonomous University of Coahuila was founded in March 1957 pursuant to a decree issued by the local house of representatives with the aim of coordinating the activities undertaken by several higher education institutions that already operated in the State of Coahuila in those days. This decree was also aimed at establishing other institutions that would be needed. It became independent on March 24th, 1973.

The objectives of the University are: to offer high school and higher education with the aim of preparing professionals, researchers, university professors and technicians that could serve our society; to organise and conduct research, mainly into national, regional and local conditions and problems. Another objective is to spread, as much as possible, the benefits of culture.

The University is divided into three academic units. The Saltillo Unit is comprised of 24 schools, faculties and institutes located in the cities of Saltillo and Parras de la Fuente. The Torreón Unit has 17 schools, faculties and institutes found in the municipalities of Torreón and San Pedro de las Colinas. The Northern Unit is comprised of 10 schools, faculties and institutes located in Monclova, Nueva Rosita, Allende, Piedras Negras and Ciudad Acuña.

The University has 13 high schools offering full-time and part-time programmes; in addition, it offers 62 bachelor’s programmes and 67 graduate programmes (28 specialties, 43 master’s degrees and 5 doctorates).

The University has become stronger in the past few years as a result of the establishment of processes and mechanisms aimed at improving the quality of the University’s educational programmes and the infrastructure of its academic facilities, with the assistance of the national programmes promoted by the Ministry of Public Education of the federal government. The fact that these programmes have been implemented at our University has enabled us to make progress in terms of infrastructure and equipment. These programmes have also made it possible to redirect the design of our curricula, thus resulting in flexible academic programmes whose quality has been certified.

Nowadays, the University has 34,692 students, including 13,393 in its high schools, 19,529 enrolled on its bachelor’s programmes and 1,770 on its graduate programmes. 78.4 percent of its students are enrolled on 58 assessable bachelor’s programmes whose quality has been certified by CIEES. Thirty-five of these programmes are included in CIEES’s level one category and 28 have been accredited by organs endorsed by COPAES. The University has 550 full-time professors, 66.7 percent of whom have completed graduate studies.
