UNIVERSITY OF SONORA

The University of Sonora, founded in 1942, is an autonomous higher education institution funded by the State. It represents the most valuable cultural and scientific heritage of the State of Sonora, in view of the size and quality of the University's human and material resources, its number of students, the presence of its alumni and its contribution to the region's history.

The University's geographic and strategic location enables it to play a vital role and offer new educational options, as well as to generate and apply new knowledge.The University of Sonora has 3 Regional Units and its structure is supported by 5 campuses with divisional and departmental organization.

The total number of students being attended to in the 2005-2006 school year is 29,383, a number that is divided according to the following: 5,452 taking 8 languages; 621 in 4 art academies; 596 enrolled in 25 graduate programmes (6 specialties, 16 master's degrees and 3 doctorates); and 22,714 bachelor's students enrolled in a total of 39 educational programmes.

All of the University's bachelor's programmes, except for 5, have been updated in accordance with the new curricular model whose programmes include discipline, professional education and axiology in 5 educational pillars:the common core, basic education, specializing education and the integrating education pillar. This model is characterised by solid basic education, flexibility, commitment to the social reality of the country and direct cooperation with the social and¿ productive sectors, in addition to being student-centred and committed to students.

All of the University's assessable educational programmes have been examined by CIEES, and 24 of these programmes are included in CIESS's Level I classification, which account for 91.3% of the University's student body.To this day, 20,184 students have registered for the University's tutoring programme.The University's faculty is comprised of 884 professors, 47% of whom have a master's degree and 21% have completed a doctorate.

The University has 279 lines of generation and application of knowledge and 469 institutional projects.The University's academic bodies accredited by PROMEP are 105:7 of them are consolidated, 17 are in the process of being consolidated and 81 are in the process of being formed.
